Shipping from china to kenya manufacturers

There are three main modes: Sea Freight, Air Freight, and Express Courier. Sea freight is the most cost-effective for bulk goods, typically arriving at the Port of Mombasa in 25–35 days. Air freight is faster, taking 3–7 days, and is ideal for high-value or time-sensitive items. Express services (like DHL or FedEx) offer door-to-door delivery within 3–5 days but at the highest cost.

The most critical requirement is the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC). Most regulated goods must have a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) issued by an authorized inspection agency (like SGS or Intertek) before leaving China. Importing goods without a CoC can result in fines of 15% of the CIF value and mandatory local inspection costs.

Kenya uses the CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) value to calculate duties. You must account for the Import Declaration Fee (IDF), which is 3.5% of the CIF value, and the Railway Development Levy (RDL) at 2%. Standard VAT is 16%, though specific products may attract additional Excise Duty or Anti-Dumping duties.

Labels must be in English and/or Swahili. They must clearly state the country of origin (Made in China), product description, batch numbers, and expiry dates for perishables. For fragile B2B equipment, use IPPC-certified wooden pallets to comply with international phytosanitary standards and prevent delays at customs.

The primary risks include port congestion at Mombasa and customs clearance delays due to documentation errors. To mitigate this, ensure your supplier provides the Bill of Lading, Packing List, and Commercial Invoice with 100% accuracy. Using a reputable freight forwarder found on Made-in-China.com who understands the KRA (Kenya Revenue Authority) Simba/iCMS system is highly recommended.

For new buyers, negotiating FOB (Free On Board) terms is often best, as it allows you to control the freight costs and choose your own forwarder. If you prefer a hands-off approach, DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is possible through specialized logistics providers, but ensure the total landed cost is transparently broken down to avoid hidden 'handling fees' upon arrival in Nairobi.

Always use Trade Assurance or Secure Payment services provided by platforms like Made-in-China.com to protect your funds until the shipping documents are verified. Never wire full payments to private accounts; ensure the bank account name matches the company name on the proforma invoice. Additionally, marine insurance is a low-cost necessity, typically costing 0.3% to 0.5% of the cargo value.

Kenya is a member of the East African Community (EAC), meaning goods cleared in Kenya can often be moved to Uganda or Rwanda under the Single Customs Territory. Stay updated on prohibited items lists issued by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), as policies regarding second-hand electronics or specific chemicals can change rapidly.
