The choice depends on your cargo volume, budget, and urgency. Sea Freight is the most cost-effective for large volumes (FCL/LCL), typically arriving at Chittagong Port before being transported to Dhaka. Air Freight is ideal for high-value or time-sensitive goods, arriving directly at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC). For land-locked connectivity, Multimodal Transport (Sea-to-Road) is a common professional choice to reach inland depots in Dhaka.
Bangladesh has strict import regulations. You must provide a Letter of Credit (L/C), as it is the mandatory payment method for most commercial imports. Additionally, a Clean Report of Findings (CRF), Commercial Invoice, Packing List, and a Certificate of Origin are vital. Ensure your supplier provides a Bill of Lading (B/L) or Air Waybill (AWB) that matches the L/C terms exactly to avoid heavy fines or shipment seizures.
In Bangladesh, the L/C is the legal backbone of international trade. Shipping documents must strictly adhere to the L/C terms (UCP 600). Any discrepancy in the description of goods, weight, or shipping marks between the invoice and the L/C can lead to payment delays or refusal by the issuing bank. It is critical to work with freight forwarders experienced in the Bangladesh banking and customs ecosystem.
Transit time is influenced by port congestion at Chittagong and the efficiency of the feeder vessel from transshipment hubs like Singapore or Colombo. Sea freight usually takes 20–30 days, while air freight takes 3–7 days. During peak seasons or local festivals (like Eid), port dwell times can increase significantly, so buffer periods should be integrated into your supply chain planning.
To avoid unexpected expenses, negotiate for 14–21 days of free time at the destination port within your contract. High congestion at Chittagong often leads to demurrage and detention charges. Using a freight forwarder with a strong local office in Dhaka can help expedite the 'Bill of Entry' filing and move cargo to Inland Container Depots (ICDs) faster.
Always request All-In rates to ensure transparency regarding fuel surcharges (BAF) and currency adjustments (CAF). Prioritize providers on Made-in-China.com who offer door-to-door (DDP/DDU) services if you lack a local clearing agent. Verify if the provider has experience with BSTI (Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution) regulated products to ensure smooth technical clearance.
Utilize Trade Assurance or secure payment links provided by reputable platforms like Made-in-China.com. Never transfer full payments to unverified private accounts. For the shipping component, ensure the Master Bill of Lading (MBL) is issued by a reputable carrier, and only release the final payment once the House Bill of Lading (HBL) is verified against the carrier's tracking system.
Due to multiple handling points and the humid tropical climate in Bangladesh, use heavy-duty moisture-proof packaging. For sea freight, palletizing with shrink wrap and silica gel desiccant is highly recommended to prevent mold and water damage during the transshipment process in equatorial waters.
