Scrap used rail manufacturers

Scrap rails are typically categorized by their weight per meter, with R50 (51.67 kg/m) and R65 (64.72 kg/m) being the most sought-after standards. Buyers must verify the chemical composition, specifically ensuring Carbon content (0.60%–0.82%) and Manganese (0.60%–1.05%) levels meet re-rolling or smelting requirements. Additionally, the material should be free from excessive rust, slag, dross, and non-ferrous inclusions to ensure high yield during processing.

Quality is defined by the ISRI (Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries) codes, usually ISRI 27-29. Professional buyers should demand that the scrap is free from bombs, arms, ammunition, and radioactive contamination. It is standard practice to require a Radiation-Free Certificate and a De-pollution Certificate. The rails should be cut to specific lengths (e.g., 1.0m or 1.5m) as per the buyer's furnace or processing equipment requirements to avoid additional local processing costs.

The supplier must provide a Certificate of Origin and a SGS or CCIC Inspection Report at the loading port to verify quantity and quality. For environmental compliance, ensure the shipment adheres to the Basel Convention if applicable, and check if the destination country requires a Pre-shipment Inspection Certificate (PSI). Always verify that the supplier has a valid Export License for scrap metal, as many countries have strict quotas or bans on steel scrap exports.

Scrap rails are primarily used as high-quality feedstock for electric arc furnaces (EAF) in steel mills due to their predictable chemical properties. They are also used for re-rolling into smaller profiles like rebar or light rails. In some infrastructure projects, they may be repurposed for temporary shoring or foundation piling, provided they maintain structural integrity.

The scrap metal industry is high-risk for 'Ghost Shipments' or 'Material Substitution', where the seller provides photos of high-quality rail but loads low-grade iron scrap or heavy stones. To mitigate this, never pay 100% upfront via T/T. Use a Non-Transferable Letter of Credit (L/C) payable at sight against shipping documents and a third-party inspection report (SGS). Be wary of prices significantly below the LME (London Metal Exchange) or SteelMint market indices.

Conduct a thorough due diligence on the supplier's past performance. Use platforms like Made-in-China.com to identify Audited Suppliers who have undergone third-party verification of their business license and production capabilities. Request a Video Audit of the scrap yard to confirm the physical existence of the stock and check for Gold Member status to ensure a higher level of accountability.

Given the heavy weight of scrap rail, Freight On Board (FOB) or Cost and Freight (CFR) are the most common Incoterms. Buyers should negotiate for at least 14–21 days of free time at the destination port (Demurrage/Detention) to allow for customs clearance and inland transport. Ensure the contract specifies the loading rate and discharge rate to avoid unexpected port penalties.

Monitor Export Duties in the source country (e.g., India, Russia, or African nations), as sudden policy changes can lead to contract defaults. Ensure your contract includes a Force Majeure clause that specifically covers government-imposed export bans. Additionally, check your local Import Tariffs and Anti-Dumping Duties on steel scrap to calculate the true Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
