When evaluating cotton padded coats, the insulation weight (GSM) is critical; for winter wear, a filling of 200-400 GSM is recommended. Ensure the outer shell uses high-density polyester or nylon with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating to prevent moisture penetration. Additionally, check for down-proof stitching or baffle construction to ensure the padding remains evenly distributed and does not clump after washing.
Buyers should prioritize suppliers who hold the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification, which guarantees the garment is free from harmful chemicals. For the US market, compliance with CPSIA (especially for children's coats) is mandatory, while the EU market requires adherence to REACH regulations. If the product claims to use organic materials, verify the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification.
Focus on the seam strength and stitch density (typically 10-12 stitches per inch). Inspect the quality of hardware, such as YKK zippers or reinforced snap buttons, as these are common failure points. Request a colorfastness test report (Grade 4 or higher) and a shrinkage test to ensure the coat maintains its shape and appearance after multiple industrial or home laundry cycles.
Most professional manufacturers on Made-in-China.com offer OEM/ODM services, including private labeling (woven labels and hangtags), custom color dyeing (based on Pantone codes), and logo application via embroidery or screen printing. You can also request functional modifications like detachable hoods, adjustable cuffs, or internal security pockets to differentiate your product in the market.
Always implement a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) conducted by a third-party agency like SGS or Intertek. Utilize Trade Assurance services provided by Made-in-China.com to ensure your payment is protected until the goods are verified. Never settle for a 'golden sample' alone; ensure the Purchase Order (PO) explicitly defines the Acceptable Quality Level (AQL 2.5/4.0).
Cotton padded coats are high-volume, low-weight items. To reduce costs, request vacuum packaging to minimize the cubic volume, which can reduce shipping fees by up to 30-50%. For large volumes, Sea Freight (FCL or LCL) is the most economical, but ensure you factor in a 4-6 week lead time. For urgent seasonal stock, Rail Freight (for Eurasia) offers a middle ground between speed and cost.
Focus on long-term partnership potential rather than just the lowest price. Negotiate based on volume tiers; for example, ask for a price break at 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units. Discussing payment terms (e.g., 30% deposit, 70% against Bill of Lading) can also provide better cash flow flexibility than trying to squeeze the unit margin to the point where the supplier might compromise on material quality.
Check the HS Code (typically 6201 or 6202) for cotton padded coats to determine the specific import duties in your country. Be aware of Anti-Dumping duties or specific trade agreements (like RCEP or GSP) that might offer duty exemptions. Always calculate the Landed Cost, which includes the unit price, shipping, insurance, and customs duties, to ensure your retail margins remain viable.
